Typographic maps usually come in just black and white or two colours but I wanted to make something that was far more vibrant. The Pan-African colours were tricky to work with. I experimented with yellow type on a black background before deciding to go with a black font and yellow shadow over a green background. Each country’s name was then hand inserted letter by letter into very widely varying shapes. You can see from the inset that this was quite a difficult operation. The title’s a strap down the left hand side and there’s a decorative border that’s the names of all of the African countries. The whole map clicked when I gave it a three tone background in yellow, red and black.
